Golf Ball Numbers

Golf ball numbers are meaningful if they are to you. Never read too much into the numbers. There is not much of a meaning unless you play the game. So what do these numbers mean? How does it aid you to improve your game? What does it do to help in your area of interest? Lets take a peak behind the numbers to unveil the meaning.

If you notice, there is a number in every golf ball. More common numbers are 1, 2, 3 and 4. There are also numbers from 0 - 9. Some sport numbers like 300. Others are 60-70 or 100-110. Novices might get confused by them initially, so do shoppers who wonder if the numbers might be something technical. If you are just out to amplify your company's reputation, these golf ball numbers will not mean anything. And yes, the numbers really do not mean much.

Golfers normally play in a group. The numbers from 1 - 4 normally are for identification purposes! Say you golf with 3 others, each one of you will use a different golf ball number to know which is yours. If you are buying a sleeve of golf balls, they will be having the same ID number.

What about the numbers from 300-400? They represent the number of dimples on the ball.

The other type of numbers are meant for the compression rating. Golf balls with compression ratings of 60-80's tend to be used more by ladies. They get more distance in the expense of accuracy. 110 compression rating meant that you had to use more energy to move the ball. The higher the compression, the easier it is to control as the ball tends to bounce less and it is more firm.

However, in the late 90's, solid core balls replaced wounded balls as they were more cost effective and easier to manufacture. As we know that lower compression ratings would lead to higher bounce and greater distance, the feel of the stroke became more important to golfers rather than distance. The compression rating theses days are now within the range of 30-40 up to 100 depending on the manufacturer. A large chunk of golf balls are now in the lower compression and solid core types and the ratings for compression were dropped due to the stigma that theses are ladies balls. You do find the compression ratings on some brands these days but they are within 2 digits.

In conclusion, a singer number is an ID number, double digits are for compression ratings and thriple digits within the range of 300-500 are dimple numbers.

Advice for the day?

Know your swings and feels. If you know your swing speed, go for a lower compression balls as it gives you more spring effect. Take advantage of it to make your golf ball go where you want. A golfer with a higher swing speed should use a higher compression golf ball so they don’t squish it to much and loose the effect of the ball. A general guideline for lower swings is 80 and for higher swings is 110. That should do fine!
